BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team swept Howard Payne University 3-0 Tuesday evening in Brownwood.
UMHB used a 10-1 run late in the first set to gain a 22-10 lead over the Yellow Jackets.
Hannah Frasca scored two of UMHB's final three points to give the Cru a 25-11 first-set win. UMHB held a steady lead through the second set, pulling ahead with
Sydney Bowen serving four consecutive points to put the Cru up by eight. UMHB closed the set with a 4-0 run to earn a 25-14 win. Howard Payne jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third but UMHB rallied to even the match at 4-4.
Kayla Janikula served four points midway through the set, giving the Cru a six-point lead. From there, UMHB cruised to a 25-12 third-set win for the 3-0 final.
"It was nice for us to pick up another road win in conference," Head Coach
Mark Pryor said. "We were able to rest some players and get some others in for playing time. This is a big weekend coming up for us with some quality teams; and we're excited for the challenge."
Kylie Metcalf and
Hannah Frasca led the Cru with seven kills each while
McKenna Cowsert added six. Metcalf hit .429 individually, leading the Cru to a .238 percentage in the match. UMHB hit just five errors against the Yellow Jackets on 101 total attacks.
Alli Pierce assisted 17 kills while
Ella Brunson added five assists. Bowen led the Cru with four service aces, followed by Pierce with two. On the defensive side of the ball,
Alyssa Christiansen was UMHB's leader with 12 digs.
Sam Sommerfeld added 11 digs for the Cru as UMHB totaled 42 in the match. The Cru limited Howard Payne to a .054 hitting percentage in the contest.
UMHB returns to action Friday, September 17
th in a 6 p.m. match at the University of Texas at Dallas. UMHB meets the Comets for the first time after beating them in the 2020-2021 ASC Championship last season.
