RICHARDSON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team went four sets with the University of Texas at Dallas Friday in Richardson, beating the Comets 3-1. The win improved UMHB to 9-0 on the season and 5-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Comets fell to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in league play.
UMHB used 7-0 runs in the first and second sets to earn 25-20, 25-18 wins. The Comets led 23-19 in the fourth set but UMHB fought back, tying the set at 25. UTD finished with a 3-1 run to win the set 28-26. The fourth set also played to a 25-25 tie. UMHB fought off a pair of set-points and finished off the Comets with a 29-27 fourth-set win.
Hannah Frasca came out hammering, leading the Cru with 21 kills. Kayla Janikula added 14 kills, hitting .419 while Kylie Metcalf tallied 11. Metcalf was also a defensive presence at the net, leading UMHB with five blocks. Alli Pierce was an all-around presence for the Cru, leading UMHB with 50 assists, 28 digs and three aces. Alyssa Christiansen added 16 digs, Frasca added 15 and Maddie Gillispie totaled 14.
"It was a great match," Head Coach Mark Pryor said. "UTD is a really good team...they are really physical offensively. We were really tested. We haven't had a lot of sets that have gone into 'extra innings' so this was a learning experience for us."
UMHB returns to action in a 2 p.m. match at LeTourneau University tomorrow in Longview.
"We are prepping for a very dangerous team," Pryor said.
