Football hops over Austin College

BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team pitched a three-quarter shutout against the Austin College Roos Saturday afternoon in Belton for a 38-7 win. UMHB improved to 4-1 on the season while the Roos fell to 0-4. 
 
UMHB opened the game with a 14-play, 45-yard drive, capped by a 25-yard field goal from Anthony Avila. The Roos responded, driving 89 yards on eight plays with Tyler James finding the end zone on a one-yard punch. UMHB quickly responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass from King to Marvin Young Jr. to give the Cru another lead.
 
K.J. Miller opened the second quarter with a nine-yard touchdown grab, before Kenneth Miller Jr. ran in 32 yards for another Crusader touchdown. Aphonso Thomas added another second-quarter score the Cru, running one in from nine yards out to put the Cru up 31-7 at the half
 
K.J. Miller ran in the final touchdown for the Cru, scoring on a reverse from 16 yards out with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter. UMHB totaled 547 yards of offense on 30 first downs, with 179 yards in the air and 368 yards on the ground. King completed 14 passes for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns, adding 38 rushing yards. Thomas led UMHB's ground game with 106 yards on 18 attempts while Kenneth Miller, Jr. added 96 yards on 10 attempts. UMHB averaged 7.7 yards per rush in the game. K.J. Miller was also the Cru's leading receiver with 55 yards and a score on five total receptions.
 
UMHB's defense limited the Roos to just 145 yards of offense and 11 first downs in the contest. Durand Hill led the Crusader defense with 13 total tackles and two tackles for loss while Mason Cavness added seven tackles. Johnny Smith-Rider and Te'Ron Brown both had five tackles in the game with Trey Belyeu-Witcher and Sante Parker, Jr. teaming up for a sack. Omari Frazier grabbed his third turnover in a pair of games with a fumble recovery.
 
The Cru goes back on the road next week in a 1 p.m. contest at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall.
