Volleyball defeats St. Joseph’s and Simpson

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team claimed two wins against St. Joseph's College of Maine and Simpsons College Saturday in Houston at the University of St. Thomas Tournament. The Cru improved to a 7-2 overall record.
 
UMHB opened the day with a sweep over St. Joseph's College. The Monks kept the first set close, until The Cru used a seven-point run to take a large advantage. UMHB did not let up, claiming a 25-11 first-set win. The Cru kept their momentum going and took the second-set 25-13 victory. UMHB opened third-set action with a 10-point run, and cruised to a 25-9 win to secure the match.
 
Jenci Seahorn led the Cru with five kills while Katie Warden added four to UMHB's total 26. The Cru totaled nine service aces with Gracie Nichols leading with four. Defensively, Warden and Seahorn each had two blocks.
 
UMHB earned their second win of the day 3-1 over Simpson College. The Storm opened the first set jumping to an early lead. The Cru fought back to tie the set 17-17 after a seven-point run, but could not keep pace, dropping the first set 27-25. UMHB had a lead as big as 10 points in second-set action. The Storm used a seven-point run to close in on the Cru, but dropped the set 25-22. UMHB used two large runs to break away in the third set, cruising to a 25-19 win. The two teams battled through the fourth set, but the Cru sealed the 31-29 win with an ace by Maddie Gillispie.
 
UMHB totaled 50 kills over the four matches with Hannah Frasca, Warden and Kaylie Vasil all totaling 13. The Cru offense was anchored by Ella Brunson with 35 assists. UMHB tacked on 12 serving aces led by Nichols with five. Defensively, the Cru totaled 84 digs with Frasca and Alyssa Christiansen adding 28 and 21, respectively.
 
UMHB returns to action Tuesday, September 13th in a 6:00 P.M. match against McMurry University in Abilene.
