BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men's soccer team earned a 3-1 win over Howard Payne University Thursday night in Brownwood. The win improved the Cru to 5-3-1 on the season and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference action while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Alex Bethke put the Cru ahead in the 26
th minute, scoring off a corner kick from
Sawyer Young for the go-ahead. UMHB held a one-goal lead until the 37
th minute when
Xjavier Martinez assisted a
Mason Munoz goal. UMHB held the two-goal margin into halftime. The Cru outshot the Yellow Jackets 8-1 in the first half and did not give up a single corner kick.
The second half played scoreless until the 86
th minute when Taylor Hefner put the Yellow Jackets on the board with a goal. UMHB responded exactly two minutes later with a score from
Ethan Buchanan to put the Cru back up by two.
UMHB totaled 22 shots in the contest, putting nine on frame. Munoz led the Cru with five shots, followed by
Ethan Buchanan and
Alex Bethke with three each. UMHB's defense allowed just six shots in the game.
Hayden Owens earned the complete-game shutout in the net for UMHB.
UMHB returns to action on Saturday, October 7
th in a 3:30 p.m. match at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
