Women’s Basketball takes down undefeated Southwestern

BELTON, Texas – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball took a 78-59 win over Southwestern Saturday afternoon in Belton. With this win, the Cru improves to 2-4 on the season while the Pirates fall to 3-1.

Southwestern got on the board first with a jumper just 30 seconds in to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Cru responded, scoring 19 consecutive points while holding the Pirates to just two. In this run Mia Lozoya put up eleven points, including three made three-pointers. Josie Bruder closed out the period with a jumper, ending the quarter with UMHB on top 23-11.

The Pirates cut the Cru lead to 28-20 in the second frame. Lozoya and Rachel Okoye added a jumper each, followed by a driving layup from Amari Welch to move the score to 34-22. Amillion Fowler rounded out the half with a jumper with 0:37 to play, closing the half with a score of 40-27.

Mia Lozoya led the first half with 13 points, going three-for-three from the three-point line. Josie Burder and Rachel Okoye each added five boards, while Amari Welch had two steals.

Lozoya opened the second half with an 8:47 three-pointer, with Josie Bruder adding one of her own at 6:56 to make it a 47-32 game. The Cru ended the third quarter with a 57-46 lead.

Amari Welch came out in the fourth with a jumper followed by a free throw. Rachel Okoye hit back-to-back driving layups on two consecutive possessions. Lozoya sealed the victory for UMHB with her fifth three-pointer of the match, giving the Cru a 78-59 win.

Lozoya was the leading score of the match, going five-for-six from the arc, finishing with 19 points. Rachel Okoye followed with 14 points, along with Katelen Brooks with 12. Okoye also led defensively with 13 rebounds.

UMHB returns to action at home on Saturday, November 29th in a 2:00pm contest against Concordia University Texas.
