JACKSON, Miss. – University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball dropped two games to Belhaven University in Mississippi on Monday. The losses drop the Cru's record to 3-2 on the season, while Belhaven improves to 4-1.
Eileigh Whyte opened the game with a shutout first inning before the Blazers scored a pair of runs in the second. Belhaven tacked on single-run innings in the third and fourth to take a 4-0 lead. UMHB answered with two runs in the fifth.
Kyler Sanders reached on a throwing error then advanced to second on another error.
Lindsey Polleschultz used a sacrifice fly to advance both Sanders and
Shorey Nguyen before
Tori Skinner scored Sanders with an RBI.
Bailey Frenzel followed, hitting in Nguyen with a single to left center, cutting the gap to two.
The Blazers quickly loaded the bases in the fifth, scoring runs off a walk, single and groundout for a 7-2 lead. That score held until the top of the seventh when the Cru got back on the board. Nguyen reached on an error then advanced to second.
Lindsey Polleschultz advanced her to third before a sacrifice fly from Skinner scored Nguyen.
Bailey Frenzel followed that with a solo home run to left field, giving the Cru four runs. Belhaven got out of the inning on the next at-bat, ending the contest in a 7-4 Blazer win.
Frenzel and
Taylor Henken led the Cru with two hits while Nguyen score a team-high two runs.
Eileigh Whyte took the loss in the circle, throwing four innings with three earned runs allowed.
Chloee Miller pitched in relief, putting in two frames with three hits and three runs allowed. UMHB totaled four runs on seven hits with one error while the Blazers tallied seven runs on 11 hits with three errors.
Lindsey Polleschultz opened game two with a single to third before stealing second.
Bailey Frenzel followed with a single to left field, advancing Polleschultz to third.
Bryton Wright loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Polleschultz was thrown out by the pitcher at home, allowing
Tori Skinner to reach on a fielder's choice. With the bases still loaded, Victoria Shimabukuro drew a walk, scoring Frenzel to give the Cru a 1-0 lead to end the top of the first inning. Wright pitched a shutout inning to close the frame with a Cru lead.
Taylor Henken opened the third inning with a lead-off walk, stealing second to get in scoring position. Frenzel followed, drawing a walk, with
Ava Jolley in to pinch run for her.
Tori Skinner pushed an RBI single to second base, allowing Henken to score extending the lead 2-0. The Blazers responded with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the third to even the game at two. The Blazers had their breakout inning in the fifth, scoring seven runs on five hits to take a 9-2 lead. UMHB was unable to add anymore runs, as Belhaven added one more on a homerun in the sixth to secure their 10-2 victory.
Bailey Frenzel was the offensive leader in game two for the Cru with two hits and a 1.000 on base percentage.
Tori Skinner and Victoria Shimabukuro each added one RBI, while
Taylor Henken had a team-high two stolen bases.
Bryton Wright had the loss in the circle pitching 4.2 innings, with
Ella Gamblin coming in for relief for 0.1.
UMHB returns to action in Georgetown on February 26
th in a 6:00 PM contest against Southwestern University.
