BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team swept a doubleheader with York College 8-7, 9-0 Wednesday in Belton. The wins improved the Cru to 8-2 overall while the Spartans fell to 1-5.
Eileigh Whyte opened the game with a perfect first frame before giving up a solo home run in the second. UMHB exploded with six runs in the bottom of that inning.
Bryton Wright opened with a double to right field before
Taylor Henken reached on a walk. Gabi Vela advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt, followed by a three-RBI home run from
Kylie Hoggatt.
Madeline Stephenson got on base with a hit-by-pitch and promptly stole second to get into scoring position.
Lindsey Polleschultz reached on an error then advanced on a steal.
Shorey Nguyen loaded the bases with a single to third before
Bailey Frenzel earned a walk to score Stephenson.
Tori Skinner followed that with a two-RBI single to centerfield, putting the Cru ahead 6-1.
Jordyn Woodling responded with a two-RBI home run in the top of the third for the Spartans. UMHB tacked on one more run in the bottom of that frame off an RBI single from Nguyen.
Beth Ann Johnston threw a perfect fourth inning for the Cru. UMHB followed with another single run, scoring off an RBI from Wright. York added two more runs in the fifth for an 8-5 score which held until the top of the seventh. The Spartans added two more runs off another home run in the seventh but
Beth Ann Johnston got out of the jam to secure the 8-7 win.
Nguyen, Skinner and Hoggatt each led the Cru with two hits while Hoggatt had a team-high three RBI. Eight different Crusaders scored runs in the win.
Eileigh Whyte opened the game in the circle with four hits and three runs allowed. Johnston pitched in relief, throwing five innings with four earned runs allowed. UMHB totaled seven runs on 11 hits with one error while the Cru had eight runs on eight hits with one error.
UMHB opened game two with a solo run first inning, scoring
Lindsey Polleschultz off a foul fly from
Kylie Hoggatt. The Cru tacked on three more runs in the second, scoring
Sydney Bearden off an error and
Shorey Nguyen and Polleschultz off a two-RBI double from Hoggatt.
York threatened with base runners in the top of the fourth but
Chloee Miller pitched out of the jam to keep the Spartans scoreless. Hoggatt slammed her second home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, putting the Cru up by five runs.
Tori Skinner got on base with a walk and scored a few batters later on a passed ball, giving the Cru a 6-0 lead.
Bryton Wright sealed the win for UMHB, hitting a three-RBI home run to end the game in a 9-0 UMHB victory.
Hoggatt, Frenzel and Wright led the Cru with two hits each while Hoggatt and Wright each recorded a team-high three runs.
Chloee Miller earned the win in the circle for the Cru, throwing a complete-game shutout with just two hits allowed. UMHB scored nine runs on seven hits while the Spartans had two hits and one error.
UMHB returns to action on Thursday, March 6
th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Carnegie Mellon University at Dee Dillon Field in Belton.
