BELTON, Texas - The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned two wins in a Thursday night doubleheader against Carnegie Mellon University. With the wins, the Cru's record improves to 10-2 on the season, while the Tartans fall to 1-7.
 
Lindsey Polleschultz opened the game with a single to third base and advanced off a single from 
Shorey Nguyen. 
Bailey Frenzel moved both runners with a single to left field, scoring Polleschultz for a 1-0 lead. 
Bryton Wright hit in Nguyen with another single to left on the next at-bat, putting the Cru ahead 2-0 in the first.
 
The two-run lead held until the bottom of the fourth inning when UMHB added two more runs. 
Taylor Henken reached on an error and advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt from 
Gabriela Vela. Henken came around to score off an error on a 
Kyler Sanders at-bat before Polleschultz tripled to score Sanders for a 4-0 lead. The Cru added one more run in the fifth, scoring 
Ava Jolley off a single to centerfield from Wright.
 
CMU put runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth but 
Ella Gamblin pitched out of the jam to preserve the shutout and seal the Cru's 5-0 win.
 
Polleschultz led the Cru with three hits, followed by Wright with two. Wright also had a team-high two RBI while five different Crusaders scored runs for UMHB. Gamblin threw the complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits with one strikeout in the outing.
 
Polleschultz opened game two with another single and scored on an RBI single from Frenzel. 
Bryton Wright advanced Frenzel to second on another single before 
Vic Shimabukuro moved both runners up with a single to right. 
Tori Skinner scored 
Ava Jolley, who was pinch running for Frenzel, with a single to left before 
Taylor Henken hit in both Shimabukuro and Skinner for a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
 
The Tartans put up their first scoring inning in the top of the second, getting a pair of runners across on a two-RBI double. Polleschultz led off another inning with a single and scored on a 
Shorey Nguyen triple on the next at-bat. Frenzel scored Nguyen with a deep double to left field to put the Cru back up by four after two frames.
 
Carnegie Mellon opened the fourth inning with a score and promptly loaded the bases, but 
Carmen Vela threw back-to-back swinging strikeouts to get out of the jam. The Cru tacked on two more runs in the fifth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single from Nguyen for an 8-3 lead.
 
Vela held the Tartans to a scoreless sixth inning, followed by a two-run Crusader inning off four hits. In the bottom of the sixth, 
Bryton Wright led off with a double to left field before 
Kylie Hoggatt drew a walk. With runners on first and second, Victoria Shimabukuro slapped a single into left field loading the bases. 
Brielle Moreland entered the game at the plate, singling to left center to push another run across the board. A few batters later, 
Lindsey Polleschultz did the same, scoring the second Cru run of the inning extending the lead to 10-3. Carnegie Mellon closed out the game with two more runs off four hits, securing the Crusader win 10-5.
 
Lindsey Polleschultz led the Cru in hits in game two going 4-5 at the plate with two runs scored, two stolen bases, and one RBI. Polleschultz added her name to the record books tonight, breaking UMHB's career stolen bases record (61). 
Kylie Hoggatt went 2-2 with two RBI and one stolen base, along with three other Crusaders who each added two hits. 
Carmen Vela earned the win in the circle pitching 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.
 
UMHB returns to action on Friday, March 7
th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at UT Dallas in Richardson.
