Baseball splits doubleheader with Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team rallied to win game one, but saw Howard Payne do the same in game two as the two programs split a doubleheader Saturday in Brownwood. UMHB won game one 7-5 before falling 5-4 in the second game. The Cru is now 13-13 overall on the season and 6-9 in American Southwest Conference play. The Yellow Jackets move to 5-18 overall and 2-16 in the ASC on the year.

The Cru grabbed an early lead and battled back from a deficit for a 7-5 victory in game one. Malek Bolin's sacrifice fly and Hunter McQuary's RBI single made it 2-0 UMHB in the top of the first. Kaden deBerardinis added an RBI single in the second to stretch it to 3-0 before Howard Payne tied it up with three runs in the bottom of the third. The Yellow Jackets added two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 5-3 lead. The Cru responded with a three-run fifth inning. Caimyn Holiday and Bolin doubled home runs and Mateo Calle drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. UMHB added an insurance run on an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth and HPU could not answer. Andrew Acierni threw a complete-game, nine-hitter to improve to 4-2 for the Cru. deBerardinis, Holiday and Bolin all had two hits to lead the Cru's eight-hit attack.

UMHB could not overcome the Yellow Jackets' four-run eighth inning in a 5-4 game two loss. The game was a scoreless pitcher's duel into the top of the sixth inning. Daylon Nebgen singled home a pair of runs to give the Cru a 2-0 advantage. The Yellow Jackets scored a run in the bottom of that inning and had runners at second and third with one out, but UMHB's Trevor Ripke worked his way out of the jam to preserve the lead. Hunter Jones singled home Bolin in the top of the eighth to make it 3-1 Cru. Howard Payne bounced back with a four-run bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead. UMHB put together three straight two-out singles in the top of the ninth with Hunter McQuary driving in a run to cut it to 5-4. Holiday and McQuary then stole third and second, but the Cru could not push across the tying run. Anthony Tovar took the loss for UMHB to drop to 1-2 on the year. McQuary led UMHB with three hits and Jones added two more in the game.

The Cru will travel to Seguin for a non-conference game at Texas Lutheran Tuesday night. UMHB will then return home to host McMurry University for a three-game conference series and the final home games of the season next Friday and Saturday.
